JFC. My mom had to go through that, almost 40 years ago. I thought we'd moved past it.

Not in the US, sadly. It's still considered a public standard for straight women's bodies to be treated as their husband's property here. And if you're not straight / a woman? Good fucking luck, and you need a friend who can lie convincingly to a doctor about being your partner who wants you to have bodily autonomy.
