Getting a house

Keep in consideration things like...

  • if the windows are not sealed right or need replacing, you are going to have to fix them out of your own pocket, and not just call the apartment manager

  • if the dishwasher, sink, garbage disposal, toilet or any other plumbing leaks, you are going to have to fix them out of your own pocket, and not just call the apartment manager

  • if the plumbing decides to back up into the house because it's not tied into the city system properly and the previous owners did not know anything about it, you are going to have to fix them out of your own pocket, and not just call the apartment manager

  • if the fence between you and the neighbors is dilapidated and in need of replacement, you are going to have to fix it out of your own pocket (along with the neighbor if it's on the property line and is a shared fence), and not just call the apartment manager

  • etc

In other words, I would not only suggest planning for the possibility of a lowered income as has been suggested previously, but also to keep in consideration that the upkeep on the place is higher as well.

...beyond that, I hope it works out for you, and Faye and I are both available if you want to talk at length about it at all (and we can recommend a good realtor too ;) )
