Fandom needs UBI. I'm serious, can you imagine how much more art and writing there would be in the world if people didn't have to grind for their right to exist? I am starting to have so many feels about how the world should support people better so that my fellow fans could write more/podfic more/fanart more etc. - it is a sorry state of the world when people don't have time to read or hone their crafts and hobbies. *sings Solidarity Forever*

Someone expressed a call for patience. It is not always the season for the ingredients that go into my fandom stew pot. Patience and time will bring many good things with them for the slow and careful recipe that is my fanwork. I will meditate on this.

So many of us have brain and energy issues! It's not just me, and I don't think 1/10th of us get the support we need. It's not just an American problem, either.

I'm already steadily accumulating medical reasons to need UBI and the would-be aristocracy of the planet is installing dictatorships across the planet in part to ensure mass starvation wherever they want to inflict it. Said wannabe-aristocrats already have paranoia of their own about the fandoms of the world too.

I've been on disability for roughly two decades and UBI sure would be nice because the amount of bureaucratic hoops I have to jump through to stay on disability is absolute bullshit [plus the other bullshit like can't get married, have to report financial gifts/donations and hope they don't cut my benefits, can't have a side hustle like Patreon for o-fic]. I've heard anti-UBI arguments like "people need to work to have a sense of purpose" and pro-"workfare" and I'm here to tell you that kind of shit is why I've been bad off for my entire adult life, because if it were so easy as ~just finding a job~ I wouldn't be living on disability this long. Some people legitimately cannot work, and no, writing my shitty fic is not a marketable skillset.

The thing with UBI though is we absolutely need safeguards in place like rent control and continued food/utility/etc assistance because landlords will just jack up rent costs and then poor people are left with the same amount of money after rent/necessities that they would have had before UBI.

But yeah, UBI needs to be a thing. And we could totally afford it if we taxed the rich appropriately, if politicians didn't live like kings, and we weren't spending trillions on bombs and shit to wave our dick at North Korea and Iran. We would also SAVE a lot on prisons and whatnot because fewer people would be doing illegal stuff to survive. I could go on and on and on but it's just... a thing that needs to happen.

I already had brain/energy issues before I got COVID and then, holy shit. I feel like a few dozen points got shaved off my IQ. It's amazing I'm still writing at all; I barely read fic anymore. >:[

I've heard that and it makes me sad, I know no country is perfect but I'd wanted to believe Canada was less of a trash fire than the US. At least you guys haven't had Trump but that's... a really low bar.

Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario, sounds kinda like the Canadian version of Trump. They have comparable policies, certainly.

Ford is one of seven premiers I'd consider Deeply Problematic right now. I know of politicians at several of the opposition parties in Ontario looking to do better and make a kinder government. And my current federal MP was part of a team bringing in an experimental UBI test run that Ford stopped immediately upon being sworn in, back when she was part of the provincial Liberals. I suspect that if she thinks she has a shot at bringing in a federal UBI...she might take it. She's not in the cabinet, but that may not matter.
