Snowflake Challenge #5: what I love about canon.

MCU is the fandom that I’ve been in the longest, and there’s just so much of it. So many side characters whose stories ache to be told. So many places the canon isn’t quite satisfying in that particular way that makes you want to rewrite it yourself. It’s a feast of plot bunny food, and I really appreciate that about it. Is it too white, too male, and too straight? Yeah, it is. I acknowledge its problems. But it is still fun to tell it’s stories and rearrange those narratives.

And if some of that love is purely to Spite Marvel and Disney? Okay, I will cop to that, too. I am very interested in writing some socialist MCU fic, as a bigger fuck-you than normal.

It really is large and sprawling and is easy to find a corner to make your own.

Maybe I should start a small challenge or something. I seem to have gotten some traction on the “socialism in the MCU” idea. And after the last four years, I think people are ready to start hearing about the alternatives to the political hellscape we live in, one with mutual aid, no stolen toothbrushes, and bread and roses for all.

I am not sure how much I can work into the story I’m working on right at this moment, but if y’all are this hungry for something I already want to do, then I’m definitely gonna.

The MCU looks like a big fandom where there's a lot of people there to spite Marvel and Disney, and to do so in ways that would be, well, historically accurate or at least closer to the truth. Or in plenty of other ways. (Steve would entirely be familiar with the Wobblies, if not in agreement with their goals, and I feel like Bucky, despite being Winter Soldier, would understand and appreciate good socialist goals. Natasha, too, possibly.)

My head canon is that Bucky would shakedown tracksuit mafia for arts funding. And eat their grandmama's cooking while flirting.

We're not (all) there to spite; some us are feeling a little jilted and staying for the sake of the characters.

Hmm. Natasha might feature largely in the next fic if I can’t wrangle Pepper into playing the buddy cop role I want her to. And since Nat was raised in a socialist state where people were supposed to take care of each other as a duty to the state, which she does in her own conflicted way, her character is ultimately an expression of the warring ideals of the USSR (as viewed through an American lens, ofc.)

Maybe I should read up on socialism as expressed in actual Russia, instead of just going with what I know from being an American socialist ... but first I should probably set a time limit and some alarms to keep from jumping down a whole-ass rabbit hole in search of a plot bunny.

Time limits are good, especially when you're aware of the rabbit hole you could be facing. Research is also good, although Stalinist communism is a big different thing. You'll find lots of pretty art, though.
