I celebrated the anniversary by picking up a copy of The Art of The Rise of Skywalker over the weekend. It's been fun reading. I do wish more user interface design artwork had been included, but that's my fixation.
I have not even seen the Rise of Skywalker, as multiple friends told me not to see it. I trust their judgment on my tastes, as well as their motivation of not having to listen to me rant about plot holes, bad characterization, and things not making any sense. But the previews did make it look like a gorgeous film, so the art director and cinematographer at least knew what they were about.
The design team - costuming, props, graphics, set decor, etc. - did their parts excellently, with the usual longstanding attention to detail and consistency.
As for the movie itself, I did go to see it, and was able to lose myself in the story, flaws and all, while it was running. Whether that speaks of flaws in my thinking...?
Nah, the ability to suspend disbelief for the purposes of entertainment is a good thing, I just have less of it than other people. Since I approach characterization as an autist, a fic writer, and a student of psychology- when the internal narrative of characters get inconsistent, I can’t help but be bothered, and a lot of times will hyper-fixate on it.
But the ability to turn that part of your brain off and let it rest? That indicates that you don’t have the same anxious distrust of being fed bad narratives as I do. I am easily manipulated if I don’t spot the trickery being used, as stories are a good way to sway people toward your thinking. So I am suspicious of the story-tellers perspectives and intentions, and my enjoyment of stories suffers for it. You may be a lot more resistant to manipulation than I am, and thus not need to guard yourself the same way.
