Well, I think your 'hunch' is pretty spot on, references or not! I minored in history way back when and follow politics closely, and I've noticed that same trend. Trying to close those gaps is a lot of work even on a personal level, and it's obviously flopping pretty hard on a more macro scale at the moment.
