I react to television with passive viewership because I can't affect the action; I react to real life with a sense of agency because I can do something about it. When something on TV is messed up, I feel powerless to do damage control; I can't make things better for the person I'm identifying with. And that helpless feeling flashes back to the same state-dependent memory of being in all of those situations before. I can't save them. And I have a thing about saving people.
